Incident 2024-004

Deepfake videos of the RBI Governor used to promote investment schemes

What happened

On 19 November 2024 the Reserve Bank of India said that fake videos of its Governor were circulating on social media, claiming that the RBI had launched or was backing certain investment schemes and advising people to put money into them.

The RBI said its officials had nothing to do with the videos, that they were fake and that it never gives investment advice, and it warned people not to fall for what it called deepfake videos. Its statement did not say who made them, or whether anyone had lost money.
